Case Study: Murkowski for Governor 2002

In one of the most expensive races in Alaska history, Frank Murkowski was elected the governor of Alaska on November 5, 2002 and sworn in to office on December 2nd of that same year. His election was the result of a twelve-month, statewide campaign that raised more than $2 million and allowed him to carry over 55 percent of the vote. Some of the challenges that the fundraising plan had to address included a limit of only $20,000 in out-of-state contributions per calendar year, and individual donor limits of only $500 per person, per calendar year. In a state with only 458,000 registered voters, a comprehensive plan was needed to overcome these challenges and reach the $2 million goal. Fundraising expectations were exceeded by organizing statewide and regional finance committees, using VIP help for special events and sending out effective direct mail to donors in remote areas of the state.
Upon conclusion of the campaign, FPN partners went to work immediately to raise over $280,000 in additional funds for the Murkowski-Leman inaugural activities. To celebrate "A New Vision" for Alaska, events were held in seven communities around the State welcoming the Murkowski-Leman administration into office. The activities included black-tie galas, family events, parades and more. In order to produce these events, statewide themes and designs were developed, funds were raised and countless volunteers were solicited. The result was ten events specific to each region of the state that celebrated Alaskan spirit and Alaskan pride.
